Mechanical properties of steel are main features in selecting steel. Determining the needs of a structure and choosing suitable steel type of steel is basic mission of an engineer. Previous studies showed that although mechanical properties are specific to materials, chemical environments can change mechanical properties. Since steel is used in many applications in different environments, selection of suitable steel type is very important. In this study, the effect of environment on mechanical properties of three different types of steel named as St37, St60 and mercury steel was investigated. Tension samples according to the ASTM E-8 were stored in H2SO4, KOH, NaOH, machine oil and water. Tension tests were carried out for three samples after second month. According to the results, H2SO4 is most affective environment on mechanical properties. However, mercury steel is the least affected steel type from environment.
