Emerald of Oltu is found in a mountainous region close to Şenkaya – Oltu
towns which are 120 km North of the pronice of Erzurum in Turkey. The Stone of opal
which is publicly called “emerald of Oltu,” has recently become one of the important
products of the jewellery sector. In the world there are 99 types of emerald. 31 types of
emerald are found in the Erzurum region. Moreover it is found out that three types
are characteristic to this region. Opal ore is discovered by chance by a medical doctor
travelling to the Turnalı Village of Şenkaya. In Oltu this precious stone is processed in
two workshops. The Oltu Stone Association has 40 craftsmen members. More than 60
craftsmen embellish their windows with oltu stone. Apart from this these craftsmen
are in close contact with the regions where the jewellery sector is active. The most
valuable types which are processed in the workshops are emerald opal and landscape
opal. In the world opal which is of emerald green color is only found in this region.
On this type of stone there are natural patterns. The local people name these patterns
as “landscape” and thus this type is called “landscape opal”. Natural patterns on the
landscape opals have different views. For this reason, in terms of their ornamentation
they reflect a “personally special” character.
