1356289039 The Use of News and Photographs in Customary and Internet Journalism: T he Case of Milliyet

New media applications and the rapid diffusion of the Internet have led to
unusual changes in reporting practices and reading behaviours. Within this process,
traditional media and the Internet media have begun to reflect a different mould
and mindset while feeding on each other. The Internet media have taken a new
turn in terms of readers/viewers, newspapers and journalists, and advertisers and
advertorial followers.
In this study, traditional journalism and virtual journalism are compared and an
answer is sought to how the Internet journalism have changed the news gathering,
writing and disseminating processes. For this purpose, content analysis method has
been used in collecting data. In order to narrow the scope of the research, we have
comparatively scrutinized the issues in the ten-day period of 5-14 January 2009 of
Milliyet, which is read/visited most (according to the latest data) in the Internet media
in Turkey, and reviewed the news in the Internet pages, the traditional newspaper
and the news photos in the context of agenda and politics, economy, culture-arts and
columns.
When Milliyet’s agenda, politics, economy, culture and arts pages and columns are
reviewed, it has been set forth that the Internet newspaper is richer than the traditional
newspaper in terms of visual materials (94,44 %) and content (55,35 %). Furthermore,
we have tried to foresee how journalism will take shape in the future considering the
preexisting situation and ongoing transformation of the profession.
