As a subject, orientalism is one of the arguments which come up with Turkey’s
Westernisation policies developed in 19th century. Orientalism depends on evaluating of
Eastern from perspective of Western, especially Eastern world’s looking many areas like
literature, art, politics, culture, religion esc. from Western view, and in the process orientalism
so branches out that becomes the occasion to criticising and blaming among intellectuals,
artists, literati. Particularly, Eastern artists, intellectuals or their works liked in Western world
took attention because of engaged a discourse of orientalism, and this idea turns into a preacceptance.
In this context, art productions which popular in Western world has been tried to
be disclosed orientalist elements by examining various dimensions. Artist, literati or author,
which has the position of addressed criticism, immediately takes on the defence mechanism
and tries to prove not being an orientalist. So the situation of not/being orientalist becomes
litmus paper of well and qualified, original works, and standing in the right place for Turkish
entellectual, author and artist. Here, it becomes essential to look evaluations of literature in
the cult work of Edward Said, named Orientalism, Western Conceptions of the Orient for
understanding correctly these arguments, determining how Western world looks to Eastern
art and especially Eastern’s literature by returning to very beginning of arguments.
