1356259484 The Place of Drummers and Horn Players Who Oversee The Rituals in Modern Society Life

In this study, The Abdals, who earn a living by drumming and playing
the horn in the counties of Osmaniye, Düziçi, Kadirli and also in the city center of
Adana had been interviewed, additionally, their current and 20 years ago’s positions
had been emphasized. In the study, 3 different residential districts, which consist of
a city center and 2 county centers, had been chosen. Also, 28 drummers and horn
players had been talked and the questions prepared beforehand were asked to the
related persons to achieve secure and detailed information by using the participant
observation technique, which is one of the observation techniques.
It had been observed that Drums and Horns were of great importance in every
ceremony with entertainment, however, with the modern society life, the importance
of drummers and horn players overseeing the ceremonies had dwindled with
time. Therefore, their being unable to find a suitable environment to practice their
profession today had also been understood.
Playing the drum and horn’s losing their former importance as a result of people’s
preferring the orchestral wedding halls instead of the weddings lasting for 3 days
and nights, making the engagements and circumcision traditions in wedding halls,
banning of playing the drums when sending soldier off to active duty, disappearing
of dowry transportation tradition had been viewed. The horn and drum are not a
making living source anymore for the Abdals whose main professions are drum
playing and horn playing. The Abdals, who can’t turn to permanent jobs as they are
not educated enough, have turned to the jobs such as scrapping, portering, removing
potato and beet. The Abdals stay at home jobless in the major part of the year, and
have difficulty supporting their family as they can’t always get enough income from
these jobs.
In this study, Drum’s and Horn’s not being able to find a place in society,
disappearing day by day and the ones’ performing this art not being able to adapt
themselves into the modern society life, and their effort of struggle for survival
had been emphasized.
