Gâvur Mahallesi, the Armenian writer Mıgırdiç Margosyan’s memoir, is a
work in short story form. In this book, the author describes Diyarbakır of 1940s through
the traces and testimonies of his childhood.The author’s prominent humorous
language is also accompanied by his satirical style in this narrative. In the text, composed
of stories associated with each other, the main setting is a neighborhood which
is largely dwelled by the Armenian population. Besides, in the main frame and background,
there stands the ancient city Diyarbakır in reconciliation with its Armenian,
Jewish, Kurdish and Turkish populations. Between the lines of this text, which deals
with the recent history of a city from a personal perspective, many personal and true
life experiences of those lands hosting a great diversity of cultures are narrated.In
this paper, Diyarbakır of 1940s in the author’s stories and how he conveys his multiculturalism
adorned by humor and satire will be discussed.
