1356125346 Istanbul’s Cafes in Our Culture and Their Contribution in Folk Literature

It is a known truth that Istanbul cafes are cultural environments contributing
in the development of folk literature, especially in the field of oral culture. With
the cafes it has been possible for minstrelsy to develop, to shape and to find itself
an environment. Beside Istanbul cafes’ objectives of entertaining, socializing and
passing a nice time, they are one of the places which contribute in communication
based on art.
Other than minstrels, theatrical arts like encomiasts and karagöz (shadow play) met
its audience in these places. Before modernization when written culture was not
common, cafes in Ottoman Society should be evaluated as places where all types of
oral culture products are narrated to entertain and to inform and at the same time to
perform art.
In this report the objective is both to introduce the art and artists of folk literature
based on cafes and to realize the change and evolution of the cultural functions of
these places.
