Gustav Klimpt, who is a representative of “Art Nouveau” movement has
changed the understanding of art of his era with his avant garde stance and has been
called a pioneer. Female form was dominant in his paintings and erotism reached its
peak with aesthetics. He has let the spectator interrogate the meaning of his products at
end points with his pictorial representations that do not fit into the toile and succeeded
in letting the spectator to make a journey into a colourful, sparkling, fabulous and
mysterious world. It has been an influential experience and adventute for the spectator
to reveal that mystery.
The changing roles of woman in the society in that period together with their liberalizing
behaviour has lead to an intensification of the use of female figure in “Art Nouveau”
movement.
Besides an aesthetic description of the external beauty of woman in erotical terms he also
revealed the superiority, productivity and power of woman. The free form of expression
in his paintings which passes the sensitive erotism coming from within the natural life
over to the spectator was criticized by the conservative thought of his and he was accused
of immorality.
In this research we shall examine the innovative and avant garde interpretation in
Klimpt’s paintings together with the aesthetic dimension of the female figure that captures
the spectator and the understanding of art that is sxpressed as a manifesto against the
repression of some aspects of the female reality.
