Marine pollution which occupies the agenda of the world,has been one of
the most important environmental pollution problems for 50 years. Ships have an
important role in among the factors causing marine pollution. When ship’s ballast
water, bilge water and solid waste are discharged to the marine environment,
they create environmental pollution and become sources of pollution which must
be controlled carefully. The 60% of the obligations which are the contents of the
process of harmonizationwith European Union are environmental issues and
more comprehensive and compelling introduction and implementation of the
obligations required each passing day. Based on the problems above; the rules of
procedures, processes and legislations in Turkey for the prevention and elimination
of marine and environment pollution that arise from maritime transport accidents
and the routine operations of vessels are evaluated.
