1356119813 Water and Irrigation Management from the Past to Today

Water is one of the most important natural resources for all living organisms
on Earth. Many civilizations were created by means of water and agricultural
irrigation. However, the same civilizations were collapsed since improper management
of irrigation. Water is necessary not only for the human life but also ecosystems,
economical development, energy production and national security. Recently, global
warming and climate change are considerable problem and approximately 70 % of
global water are consumed for the agricultural irrigation. For this, efficient use of
water is very important for all the sectors such as agriculture, industry and domestic
purposes. Thus, national and international new approaches and mechanisms on water
and irrigation management should be organized. In this article, the role of water
and irrigation on the civilizations from past through present such as Mayan, Egyptian,
Hittite, Urartu and Mesopotamian are critised. In addition, situation of irrigation
in Ottoman Empire and Republic of Turkey is explained. Lastly, GAP Project, approaches
of international institutions on water and irrigation management, the role of
United Nations and a phenomenon of virtual water were discussed.
