The aim of this study is to examine the motivation of obtaining culture of
biology in the biology department students in terms of some variables. This study
was performed on the students (N=58) of Biology department, Faculty of arts and
sciences, Batman University, in 2012. The data were collected by using the motivation
scale which was prepared with the aim of “The motivation scale for learning science:
The study of validity and Reliability” by Dede and Yaman (2008). The scale that was
prepared according to quintet Likert scale is composed of 23 items and five subdimensions.
The original form of the scale’s Cronbach alpha internal consistency
coefficient was calculated as 0.80. The data were analyzed by using the SPSS-17
packaged software and α=.05 significance level. They were also analyzed by using
the techniques such as one way variance analysis, Scheffe’ and random samplingtest.
According to the results of the search, it was confirmed that, generally, the
motivation of obtaining culture of biology of the students was high level (arithmetic
In the comparison made according to gender, there wasn’t any statistically great
difference between the arithmetic score averages of the motivation of obtaining
culture of biology of the students. In the comparison made according to the class
level, it was seen that 2nd and 3rd class students’ arithmetic averages, oriented to the
“attendance” sub- dimension, were in favor of 3rd classes statistically. According to
these data suggestions were made.
